What can be said of snowflakes could easily be said of NYC...no two visits are ever the same. As many times as I've visited, each time I've come away with a different flavour of this delightful city, a new perspective on the island of a hundred villages.Within the last year, I've visited Manhattan twice. First, my fiancee and I rang in 2010 with thousands of other revellers, singing John Lennon's Imagine at midnight as millions of confetti fluttered down on us in Times Square.
On my most recent visit this summer, I had the chance to look at the city from another point of view...from the Meapacking District...from New York Public Library after dancing all night...from the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge.
What can I say about Brooklyn...a lovely borough indeed! If you can't get into Grimaldi's because of the huge line-up (they're famous for their thin-crust pizza), you can't go wrong with any Brooklyn pizza joint.
Another highlight was watching Spanish fans celebrate their country's World Cup victory by splashing around and shouting out victory songs fully clothed in the Washington Square Park fountain.
Tortilla Flats at W12th and Washington was a great little hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant where the servers challenge you to hula hoop contests while they serve up your tacos and tequila.
In all honesty, I've come to realize that the best of New York is below 14th St., as far away from Times Square as possible. It's unpredictable, it's wild, and you have to be ready for anything.
You just might find yourself in the middle of a hot sailor sandwich during Fleet Week or eating pancakes at 4am in an East Village cafe that looks like the inside of your grandma's apartment...after a psychadelic acid trip.
